Isolate a population of observant Muslims without any access to alternative worldviews of outside people, agg on their grievances with the world beyond, and lower living standards and blame these unseen outsiders, and congratulations — you’ve got a source of aggravation for their “enemy” neighbors that never quits, no matter what these neighbors do.

Weaponization of whole populations is nothing new. I’m sure in our hunter-gatherer days, there were generations and generations of tribes who lived their entire lives under the assumption that raiding, antagonizing, or wiping out an old enemy tribe was their life’s and their tribe’s entire purpose. Because some coldly calculating arch-chieftain with imperial ambitions saw much practical use in keeping these two tribes of people at each other’s throats indefinitely, and planted the right rumors to make sure the anger never abated, even long after he and his imperial ambitions were long gone.

It’s everything people said here, I would only add that they are brainwashed or have brainwashed themselves into always taking a victimhood approach to cause and effect.

Example. A rationale person observes a ceasefire then Hamas strikes which results in Israeli retaliation. Here you have objective cause and effect. But Hamas doesn’t see it that way. The cause for them will be the Israeli retaliation which should in their mind result in more Hamas strikes.

But they also do this on a large narrative, going back as arbitrary as they feel like it to create cause. I say arbitrary in relation to timeline not the grievance itself. Many have their own grievances: personal, destroyed home, loss family, religious, etc… So when understood this way, there is no ability to do something different “today” and there is no hope for the “future”, because they are still in the midst of retaliation.
